Felt Roofs

Torch-On and Built-Up Felt Roofing across Greater London

Felt has moved a long way from the thin, single-layer sheets that once covered London garages and extensions. Modern felt roofs use polymer-modified bitumen membranes, built up in layers and bonded to the deck, with a mineral-surfaced cap sheet on top. The result is a tough, flexible covering that handles temperature swings and sunlight far better than older felt, at a cost that keeps it one of the most practical choices for a flat roof.

Ashlar Roofing installs felt as a complete system, not a single sheet laid over whatever is already there. That means stripping the old covering, checking the deck, adding insulation where it makes sense, then laying an underlay and cap sheet with carefully formed upstands, drip edges and outlets. Where a naked flame is not suitable, such as against timber cladding or under windows, cold-applied or self-adhesive layers can be used instead, so awkward areas get the same protection.

What's included

What Our Felt Roofs Service Covers

The main parts of the job, each listed in your quote.

  • The old covering stripped, so the new felt bonds to a clean, sound deck
  • Replacement of any soft or damaged decking boards
  • A layered build-up of underlay and cap sheet for a robust, watertight roof
  • Mineral-finished cap sheet that shields the bitumen from UV and wear
  • Upstands and wall junctions sealed where leaks most often start
  • Drip edges and outlets fitted so water drains cleanly off the roof

Why choose us

Why Choose Ashlar Roofing for Felt Roofs

Modern Felt Systems

We lay layered, polymer-modified felt instead of single sheets, giving you a roof made to cope with London weather.

Options Without a Flame

Where torching is unsafe next to cladding or windows, cold-applied or self-adhesive layers let the job go ahead safely.

A Fair Material Comparison

Because we also install EPDM and GRP, you get an honest view if another system would suit your roof better.

Photos on WhatsApp

Send pictures of the roof and any leaks, and we can give you an early idea of whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

What Affects the Cost of Felt Roofs

A felt roof quote is shaped by:

  • The size of the roof and access for materials
  • How many layers the chosen system uses
  • Deck repairs or replacement boards needed
  • Adding insulation or correcting the falls
  • Wall junctions, rooflights and outlets to detail

How We Carry Out Felt Roofs

The main stages of the job, from the first inspection to the final check.

  1. Inspect the Existing Roof

We check the covering, deck, falls and drainage, and confirm whether insulation or new firrings are needed.

  2. Strip and Prime

The old felt is removed, damaged boards are replaced and the surface is primed so the new layers bond well.

  3. Lay the Felt Layers

An underlay goes down first, followed by the mineral cap sheet, with laps staggered and every joint fully bonded.

  4. Complete the Details

Upstands, drip trims and outlets are finished and checked, then we review the completed work with you against what was agreed.

FAQs

Common Questions About Felt Roofs

What is a torch-on felt roof?

Torch-on felt is a bitumen membrane heated with a gas torch so it melts and bonds to the layer below. Two or three layers are built up to create a thick, fully bonded waterproof covering, finished with a mineral-surfaced cap sheet.

Is felt still a good choice for a flat roof?

For many roofs, yes. Modern felt systems are far tougher than older felt and remain cost-effective, particularly on garages and larger roofs. If your roof has lots of awkward details or will be used as a balcony, rubber or fibreglass may suit it better, and we will explain why.

Can felt be laid next to timber or under windows?

Torching close to combustible materials carries a fire risk, so in those areas self-adhesive or cold-applied felt is used instead. These layers bond without a naked flame and work within the same layered system.

Can my felt roof be repaired instead of replaced?

Small splits, blisters or a failed upstand can often be repaired. If the felt is cracked across the roof, the deck is soft or water is getting in at several points, replacement is usually better value than repeated patching.

Does a felt roof need maintenance?

Keep outlets and gutters clear, and check the roof after storms for lifted edges or damage to the mineral surface. Repairing small defects quickly helps the roof reach its full lifespan.
