Damp Proofing

Damp Diagnosis, DPC Injection and Replastering across Greater London

Damp walls come from three main sources. Penetrating damp is water getting in from outside, through leaking gutters, failed render, worn pointing or a defective roof. Condensation forms when moist indoor air meets cold walls, and shows as mould in corners and behind furniture. Rising damp is ground moisture drawn up through masonry where the damp-proof course has failed or been bridged. Each needs a different fix, and treating the wrong one wastes money without curing the problem. Ashlar Roofing starts by working out which of these is affecting your property.

In practice, many damp problems turn out to be leaks or condensation rather than true rising damp, so injecting a new damp-proof course is not always the answer. Where the evidence does point to rising damp, we can inject a chemical DPC and replaster with a salt-resistant plaster, so salts left in the wall do not spoil the new finish. Walls below ground level can be tanked to hold back moisture from the soil. Just as often, the fix is outside: clearing a gutter, repairing render, repointing brickwork or lowering ground levels that sit above the DPC.

What Our Damp Proofing Service Covers

The main parts of the job, each listed in your quote.

  • A diagnosis of the cause before any treatment is recommended, so you only pay for work that is needed
  • Repairs to gutters, render and pointing where water is getting in from outside
  • Chemical DPC injection to stop ground moisture rising where rising damp is confirmed

Why choose us

Why Choose Ashlar Roofing for Damp Proofing

Diagnosis Before Treatment

We establish whether you have penetrating damp, condensation or rising damp before recommending anything, so you are not sold a treatment you do not need.

Outside Causes Fixed

Roofs, gutters, render and walls are all services we carry out, so external causes can be repaired by the same firm that diagnosed them.

Suitable Plaster Used

Salt-resistant plasters are used after DPC injection, because ordinary gypsum plaster can draw salts to the surface and stain again.

Balanced Advice

If condensation is the cause, we will say so and explain how changes to ventilation and heating can resolve it.

Pricing

What Affects the Cost of Damp Proofing

The cost of damp treatment depends on the cause and on:

  • Whether the fix is external, such as gutters, render or pointing, or an internal treatment
  • The length and height of wall needing DPC injection
  • How much plaster has to be removed and replaced
  • Whether walls below ground level need tanking
  • Moving radiators, skirting or fitted furniture to reach the affected walls

How We Carry Out Damp Proofing

The main stages of the job, from the first inspection to the final check.

  1. Find the Cause

We inspect inside and out, take moisture readings and look at gutters, render, pointing and ground levels to work out where the water is coming from.

  2. Explain the Options

You get a clear explanation of the cause and the recommended treatment, with a quote agreed before work starts.

  3. Treat and Repair

External defects are put right first, then any DPC injection, tanking or replastering is carried out on the affected walls.

  4. Allow Drying Time

We explain how long the walls need before decorating, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Common Questions About Damp Proofing

How do I know if I have rising damp?

Rising damp usually shows as a tide mark up to about a metre above the floor, with salt deposits, crumbling plaster and decaying skirting boards. Damp higher up the wall, around windows or in corners is more likely to be a leak or condensation.

Is rising damp as common as people think?

Genuine rising damp does occur, especially in older houses with failed or bridged damp-proof courses, but it is often blamed for damp that really comes from leaks, high ground levels or condensation. That is why the cause is diagnosed before any treatment.

Why do walls need replastering after a DPC injection?

Rising damp leaves salts in the plaster that keep attracting moisture from the air. Removing the contaminated plaster and replacing it with a salt-resistant plaster lets the wall dry without new stains appearing.

What is tanking?

Tanking is a waterproof coating or membrane applied to walls that sit below ground level, such as cellars and basements, to stop moisture passing through from the soil behind.

How long does a wall take to dry after treatment?

A common rule of thumb is about a month for every 25mm of wall thickness, so a solid brick wall can take several months. Breathable paint is advisable while the wall dries out.
