Gutter Cleaning, Repairs and Replacement across Greater London

Gutters have one job: catch the water coming off the roof and send it down the downpipes, away from the building. When they block with moss and leaves, sag out of line or leak at the joints, that water spills down the brickwork instead. Over a few winters it can soak a wall right through, causing damp patches inside, stained render, spalling bricks and rot in nearby timber. Ashlar Roofing clears, repairs and replaces guttering on homes and commercial buildings across Greater London, dealing with the cause before it turns into a damp problem.

Many gutter faults are straightforward to put right when they are tackled promptly. A blocked outlet can be cleared, a dripping joint can take a new seal, and a run that holds water can be realigned to a proper fall. Where a system is brittle or broken, we replace it with new uPVC in a profile sized for the roof. On period houses, cast iron or a cast-iron-effect system can keep the original character, and we can discuss those options and their costs with you. Downpipes, hoppers and the connection to the drain are checked as part of every job.

Why choose us

Why Choose Ashlar Roofing for Guttering

Damp Traced to Its Source

Overflowing gutters are a common cause of damp walls, and we can fix both the gutter and the wall it has soaked.

Gutters and Fascias Together

If the board behind a gutter is rotten, we replace it during the same visit rather than refitting gutters to failing timber.

Period Options Discussed

For older houses we can discuss cast iron or cast-iron-effect guttering that keeps the look of the building.

Send Photos First

A few WhatsApp photos of the leak or overflow help us judge whether it is a quick repair or something larger.

What Affects the Cost of Guttering

What you pay for guttering work usually comes down to:

  • Whether the job is a clean, a repair or a full replacement
  • The length of gutter and the number of downpipes involved
  • The material, as cast iron and cast-iron-effect systems cost more than standard uPVC
  • Access to the gutters, including any need for scaffold or towers
  • Whether the fascias behind the gutter also need replacing

How We Carry Out Guttering

The main stages of the job, from the first inspection to the final check.

  1. Check the Whole Run

We look along every gutter and downpipe, note blockages, leaking joints and low spots, and photograph what we find.

  2. Agree the Repair

You get a clear recommendation, from a clean and reseal to a full replacement, with a quote agreed before work starts.

  3. Clear, Repair or Renew

Gutters are cleared by hand and joints and brackets replaced, or the old system is removed and new guttering fitted to the correct fall.

  4. Test the Flow

Water is run through the gutters to confirm they drain to the downpipes. We then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Common Questions About Guttering

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Once a year suits most houses, ideally in late autumn after the leaves have fallen. Homes near large trees or with mossy roofs may need cleaning twice a year.

Why does my gutter overflow when it is not blocked?

The usual reasons are a gutter that has lost its fall and holds water, an outlet in the wrong position, or a gutter that is too small for the roof area. Heavy downpours on large or steep roofs can overwhelm standard profiles, and a deeper section may be the answer.

Can overflowing gutters cause damp inside the house?

Yes. Water spilling down the same patch of wall again and again can soak through solid brick, causing damp patches, peeling paint and mould indoors. Fixing the gutter and letting the wall dry out is often the first step before any damp treatment.

Should I replace cast iron gutters with uPVC?

uPVC costs less and needs no painting, while cast iron is heavier, lasts a long time when maintained and suits period houses. Cast-iron-effect uPVC gives a similar look at a lower cost. We can discuss which suits your property and budget.

Can a single leaking joint be repaired?

Usually, yes. A dripping joint can often be resealed or fitted with a new union bracket without replacing the whole run, provided the gutter itself is in reasonable condition.
